Re: [cefansite] Christopher Eccleston discusses his role in Channel 4’s Close To Me

I hope they bring it to American television.  Connie Nielsen is a great actress.  I remember her from Law and Order Svu.  She took Mariska Harguay place when she was having a baby.  I know Chris will be great in this role.  Thanks for sharing this.

Doctor Who’s Christopher Eccleston ran down road thinking he was going to die during breakdown

Christopher Eccleston

Doctor Who star Christopher Eccleston has said he ran down the road thinking he was going to die during a mental breakdown in 2016.

The former Time Lord, 57, recalled reaching his lowest point where he 'nearly lost everything' after being admitted to hospital with severe clinical depression.

Speaking with Big Issue magazine vendor Clive, Christopher remembered: 'I think the received idea about people who sell The Big Issue is that they've never had a "successful life".

'But I discovered that when I had a severe clinical depression and I was hospitalised… I nearly lost everything. There was one night I thought I was going to die.

'I was running down Euston Road with a suitcase. Now, if anybody has seen me they'd have gone, "Oh, there's Doctor Who".

'My point is, I don't think people understand how quickly it can happen.'

Christopher added to the publication that he 'broke down' and experienced a mental health episode while filming for the first series of The A Word on BBC, which aired in 2016.

At the time, he was playing a character called Maurice, who was comic and bluff and would spend 10 hours a day being him.

He continued: 'I found out afterwards that I'd been in fight or flight for a couple of years and could no longer fight or fly, my brain chemistry was telling me I was about to die.

'I wasn't necessarily going to take my own life. I don't know whether it would be called psychosis, I was just convinced that I was about to die all night.'

Christopher has been very candid about his struggles, previously opening up about experiences with the suicidal thoughts he had during his battle with anorexia and how he felt he gave a 'dreadful performance' in Thor: The Dark World.

Christopher Eccleston returns to Big Finish!

13 September 2021

Big Finish Productions today announces a second series of Doctor Who – The Ninth Doctor Adventures starring Christopher Eccleston, due to be released throughout 2022 and into 2023.

Christopher Eccleston returns to Big Finish!

Last year, Big Finish announced the Ninth Doctor's return to Doctor Who, with his inaugural series of full-cast audio dramas currently delighting audiences and critics alike. Now, Christopher Eccleston returns to the TARDIS for twelve more exciting adventures in time and space, across four brand new box sets.

Each volume is now available for pre-order exclusively HERE, with prices starting at just £19.99.

Christopher Eccleston said: "Just before Christmas in 2020, I walked into a small recording studio in an industrial estate in North London. Me and the sound engineer looked at each other and we smiled and said, 'Let's go!' Then I started playing the Ninth Doctor again, and I loved it.

"It's been one of the great joys for me of the past year. It's a lovely way to do it, so I'm coming back to record more."

Big Finish Chairman Jason Haigh-Ellery said: "I am so glad that Christopher has enjoyed his time with us so much that he has agreed to continue his travels in the TARDIS.  Bringing the Ninth Doctor back to the Doctor Who universe has been one of the few enjoyable parts of the past year and I am so glad that the adventures will continue!"

Producer David Richardson added: "I've spent most of my summer weekends sitting in the garden, iPad on my lap, reading the scripts for The Ninth Doctor Adventures – Series Two. Happy days indeed. No spoilers but expect emotional, character-based stories, and lots of adventure – going deep into Earth's past and into the far future.

"From an old railway station to the seas of Titan, to a very unusual furniture store in the present day, it's another trip of a lifetime – and I can't wait to be back in the studio again in October, where we will bring these words to brilliant life. Recording the first season with Chris was one of my happiest times at Big Finish, and I feel privileged to be going back for more."

Doctor Who fans worldwide can now pre-order the second series The Ninth Doctor Adventures, which are available in three formats – collector's edition CD, digital download or limited edition gatefold triple LP vinyl – exclusively HERE.

Big Finish listeners can save by pre-ordering a bundle of the entire series for just £88 (as a collector's edition box set) or £78 (as a download).

Doctor Who – The Ninth Doctor Adventures triple LP vinyls are strictly limited to a pressing of 1,000 per volume, and can be pre-ordered at £35.99 each, or £132 for the bundle of all four albums, again exclusively HERE.

Please note: the vinyl editions do not include any behind-the-scenes extras. However, listeners purchasing vinyl LP editions will receive a download of the story automatically and be given access to the CD edits as a bonus download. Episodes will be edited specifically for the vinyl format, presented as 2 episodes, one on each side, each with opening and closing music.  In addition, all pre-orders of the vinyls will also receive the behind the extras as a bonus download.

Praise Doctor Who – The Ninth Doctor Adventures:

"A fine evocation of the Russell T Davies era..." – SFX

"We can practically hear that huge grin across Christopher Eccleston's face throughout the whole endeavour..." – Doctor Who Magazine

"Christopher Eccleston excels on audio..." – Indie Mac User

"Another winner from Big Finish..." – Set the Tape

Please note that Big Finish is currently operating a digital-first release schedule. The mail-out of collector's edition CDs and limited edition vinyl LPs may be delayed due to factors beyond our control, but all purchases of this release unlock a digital copy that can be immediately downloaded or played on the Big Finish app from the release date.

Christopher Eccleston backs Music For Dementia campaign

Former Doctor Who star Christopher Eccleston is backing a campaign to use the power of music to raise awareness of dementia.

The actor's late father Ronnie suffered with the disease and he wrote movingly about his experiences in 2019 memoir I Love The Bones Of You.

Eccleston is backing Music For Dementia's calls for people to listen to 30 minutes of music a week with a loved one to mark World Alzheimer's Month this September.

The #powerof30 campaign says music can help reduce isolation and support communication for those with the condition.

Eccleston, 57, said: "Music has the power to communicate to us on direct and subliminal levels. It can take us places. It can be transformative.

"It has a unique power of its own and within that, the power to comfort those who may be confused or in the grip of this destructive disease.  I fully support and endorse the work being done through #powerof30".

Grace Meadows, campaign director at Music For Dementia, said: "Whether you know someone with dementia or not, we hope people embrace our #powerof30 campaign. No matter what age you are, where you live or what your health is, everyone can benefit from a shared experience of listening to music."

Dementia is a syndrome associated with an ongoing decline of brain functioning.

There are more than 850,000 people in the UK who have dementia, according to the NHS, with one in 14 over the age of 65 having the illness.

Have you signed The Big Issue petition to Stop Mass Homelessness?

https://www.bigissue.com/latest/have-you-signed-our-petition-to-stop-mass-homelessness/

The Big Issue's Stop Mass Homelessness campaign, launched this week, lays out a nine-point plan to prevent "an avalanche" of homelessness hitting the UK later this year.

It follows the revelation that one household was made homeless every three and a half hours in the first 90 days of this year, which was revealed by our analysis.

A petition asking the public to back the plan has seen a rush of support. Big Issue Ambassadors Christopher EcclestonGeorge Clarke and Daniel Mays, as well as senior politicians, have also called for action to prevent homelessness.

Proud northerners Maxine Peake and Christopher Eccleston provide lifeline for Salford Lads Club

https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/proud-northerners-maxine-peake-christopher-21059598

She is proud of her roots.

Actress, Maxine Peake, was born in Bolton and lives in Salford.

The versatile star of both comedy and serious dramas moved back home after spending 13 years in London.

Actor Christopher Eccleston hails from Salford's Ellesmere Park, and found early fame for his role in the epic series "Our Friends Up North".

He once rode on his bicycle to Swinton Police station to chat to local kids.

Now they have helped cash-strapped Salford Lads Club simply by pulling on a T-shirt embossed with "The North".

They put images of themselves in the fundraising top on social media and the club sold £10,000 worth of shirts in three weeks.

Bolton-born actress, Maxine Peake, who now lives in Salford, sporting the new Salford Lads Club T-shirt, in front of a make up mirror while filming

Maxine will star in a new sexual politics thriller for the BBC, Rules of The Game, being filmed in Manchester.

She posted a picture of herself in a mirror at a makeup table in the T-shirt.

She once played sassy neighbour, Veronica, in the infamous Manchester comedy, Shameless.

The Silk actress also took on the BBC drama Three Girls, based on the true stories of victims of grooming and sexual abuse in Rochdale, playing Sara Rowbotham – a sexual health worker involved in the case and the whistleblower who exposed the extent of the child abuse.

The RADA-trained former Westhoughton High School and Canon Slade pupil landed a place at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art when she was 21 and she lived in London for 13 years.

But the former Bolton Octagon Youth Theatre pupil upped sticks and moved back up north to live in Salford in 2007

Christopher Eccleston - northern and proud - in the new Salford Lads Club T-shirt. Sales of it surged when he and Maxine Peake posted pictures on social media

She later told the Manchester Evening News: "I love London but I wanted to move back north because it has a totally different pace of life and a different community. I like that in the north nobody is impressed. I see people who believe their own hype and that's when it gets dangerous."

Christopher posted a picture of him in the shirt with a northern skyline as a backdrop.

Leslie Holmes, community artist, and spokesman for Salford Lads Club said: "When Maxine and Christopher posted pictures of themselves wearing the shirts it went ballistic for orders. They both have huge followings and there was a surge in sales and we sold £10,000 worth in three weeks, which has now increased to £14,000.

"Our latest T shirt celebrates The North. The famous Salford Lads Club sign is known around the world, thanks to the famous picture of The Smiths by Stephen Wright taken in 1985. The club continues to be a pilgrimage site for fans of The Smiths, Manchester music and culture.

Former drummer for The Smiths, Mike Joyce, in the new Lads Club T-shirt.

"In 2021 it's important to let people know we are still here, We've survived two world wars, 27 prime ministers and now Covid. More importantly as the country starts to re-open, we are proud to be a symbol of Salford, Manchester and The Norths working class heritage."

Famous former members of the club include Busby Babe, Eddie Colman and music legends Graham Nash and Alan Clarke of the Hollies.

Leslie said: "We asked some of our "friends in the north" if they'd like to help and everybody we asked has shown an amazing sense of solidarity about the new design.

"Chris Eccleston, Maxine Peake, John Thomson Mike Joyce, Vinny Peculiar, Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie have posted pictures on social media and amazingly we sold out in every size apart from XXL, but are restocking."

Boltonian Mark Radcliffe and Merseyside born and Wigan educated, Stuart Maconie, authors, radio DJs, and northerners proudly wearing the new T-shirt.

"We hope "The North" is going to an important fundraiser for the club. Like everybody else we have suffered from being closed for nearly 18 months and we have lost more than £80,000 income.

"We have benefited from recovery grants but this has gone towards making the building safe for all our young people and volunteers by installing new ventilation in the main gym and boxing gyms and games rooms."

The club will re-open to visitors on Saturday July 24th from 11am to 3pm.
