DOCTOR Who star Christopher Eccleston auditioned to be the Time Lord using his nasal hair trimmer as a sonic screwdriver.

BBC chiefs invited the actor for a secret screen test when they revived the sci-fi series in 2005.

Eccleston decided it would be a good idea if he came up with a prop to help get into character.

One of the show's writers, Pete Mctighe recalled: "Christopher brought his nasal hair trimmer along to use as his sonic screwdriver prop and then left it behind."
