Victorian Premier David Andrews called the plan a 'Hollywood coup' and claimed it would pour $20 million into the local economy and create 250 jobs.

The show explores a world in shock when 140 million people inexplicably vanish in a 'rapture-like event', and is the third-highest rating U.S. cable TV show with six million an episode.

Melbourne will not double as an American city as the show's plot will move to Australia after Theroux's character's father left for Perth in season 2.

The Leftovers' cast is just the latest batch of screen celebrities making an appearance in 2016, with filming of Thor: Ragnarok, starring Chris Hemsworth, about to start on the Gold Coast.

Others include the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean earlier this year, and upcoming Alien and King Kong sequels that will start in coming months.

They are expected to inject more than $300 million into the Australian economy and create more than 3,000 jobs.

The Leftovers is not the only international TV series either, with BBC drama Top of the Lake mid-way though filming its second season in Sydney.
